Ryan and I lead a bible study (aka small group) at the church we go to. This is our third year being in a small group, our second year leading, but our first year leading at our place. We love being apart of a small group, it is such a great way to really get to know people in the church body and develop friendships. Actually, our closest friends here were our small group leaders the first year we were in small groups.
Since our kitchen is totally separate from our living room where we meet, it is hard to have food and drinks out for people and have them feel comfortable getting up to serve themselves since they have to wonder away into the kitchen. We didn't have a table or anything in the living room to put food or drinks out. I thought it would be nice to have a rolling cart or small table we could set up when we needed it to put drinks and things on when we had company over.
So this past weekend, Ryan and I ventured out to one of my new favorite stores, the Habitat for Humanity Restore. It's a giant thrift store but with house things like kitchen sinks, toilets, windows, light fixtures, and furniture. It can be really hit or miss, since you can never really be sure if you will find what you are looking for, but we got lucky this weekend. We found this cute, but sad, little cart for only $8! It just needed a little love to bring it back to life.
The metal handles were rusting and dirty, but they cleaned right up with a little steel wool.
I am not a huge fan of baby yellow, and the paint was so chipped and dirty that it needed to be spray painted. We decided to go with a dark teal color. It's a little darker then I would usually go for, but there really aren't too many spray paint color options at Home Depot. In the end, the color really started to grow on me.
The first coat of spray paint.
The whole project took less than 2 hours. Here is the finished project!
And a before and after side by side, since those are always fun!
It was such a quick and cheap transformation, and now we have a functional little cart to use as an extra table when we have guests over. The best part is, it is so light and easy to move, that when we don't need it, we can take it downstairs and it's out of the way.
Here is the price break down:
Cart: $8
Spray paint: $3
Can't beat that!
