We started our house hunt the week after Easter. We had already met with our relator the week prior to discuss what we wanted in a house. We told him we were just at the beginning of the process of buying house and, this would most likely be a slow process for us.
We looked at four house the Saturday after Easter. After we had looked at all the houses, Ryan and I went home to have lunch and talk about what we liked and didn't like about the houses we had just seen. I decided it was best to have a conversation like they have on the HGTV show, House Hunters. You know, where they casually sit a a restaurant, after looking at their three houses, talking about which one they like best, listing off silly reason like "the first one was nice, but the bathrooms just weren't big enough!" or "yeah, I agree and, I just can't stand a kitchen without stainless steal appliances!" Fortunately, we weren't that ridulouse about our desires in a house but, we did decide to name the houses like they do on the show. The first one we named "Big Backyard," the second we named "Move in Ready" and the third we named, "Lots of Storage." Creative names, I know. We didn't name the fourth one because we knew right away upon walking in that is was not going to work.
"Big Back Yard" was a split level house with, yes, a big back
yard. The layout was really interesting and had a lot of character but,
there was no basement. No basement, means no extra room for storage of
any kind. Also, there really wasn't any space for Ryan to set up is
guitar equipment. Ryan really liked this house for all the character and it really seemed to be move in ready.
"Move in Ready" was little, only 998 square feet, but the layout
was well thought out and made it feel bigger than it actually was. The
kitchen was also the biggest of the three. It had a partially finished
basement, perfect for Ryan's guitar things, and a great room for my
sewing supplies. The house didn't have a lot of character, and it
wasn't too cute from the outside but, overall we liked it.
"Lot's of Storage" was a really unique house. Every little nook
and cranny of the house was accessible and converted into some type of
usable closet or living space. The living room and dining room was
open concept but, the kitchen was so small that you couldn't stand in
front of the oven door and open it at the same time. It was in really
cute neighborhood, with lots of trees and, on a quite street, so the
location was ideal.
The fourth house was just...creepy. It hadn't been lived in, in over a
year and the walls were cracked. There was even a GIANT hole cut into
the wall under one of the windows where I guess water had leaked in.
I was pretty much sold on the second house but, Ryan really liked the first one. After a little more discussion, Ryan agreed that the second house was really a great option for us. We emailed our agent and asked if we could put in an offer on Sunday. So much for it being a slow process!
We met with our agent Sunday after church and wrote up the offer. There was an open house at the house that afternoon. So, after we wrote the offer, we told our agent to wait on sending it until after we had seen the house one more time. We went to to open house and we knew we were making the right choice. We called our agent back and he sent over the offer!
It was pretty surreal. We had only gone out to look at houses one time but I guess what they say is true, "when you know, you know!"
